A journey through archaeology to ancient Mursiya.
This three-hour guided tour invites you to discover the Islamic origins of Murcia, founded in the 9th century as Mursiya during the period of Al-Andalus. Through a combination of urban exploration and visits to key archaeological sites, we will uncover the legacy of Islamic Murcia and understand how this medieval city shaped the present-day urban layout.
We will begin with a walking tour through the historic centre, identifying traces of the original medina, the location of former mosques, and the evolution of the city’s defensive system. The river Segura and the traditional irrigation network will help us understand why Murcia became a flourishing agricultural and cultural centre in medieval times.
The tour includes entry to three essential sites: the Conjunto Monumental de San Juan de Dios, where the remains of the former Alcázar Mayor can be visited; the Museo de Santa Clara la Real, built over the Islamic Alcázar Menor and preserving extraordinary archaeological remains; and the Centro de Visitantes Muralla de Santa Eulalia, where sections of the original Islamic city wall are still visible.
This small group tour is led by an official licensed tourist guide, a history graduate and specialist in historical heritage, offering a rigorous and engaging cultural experience for visitors interested in Islamic history and medieval Spain in the Region of Murcia.
These are the main points of interest in the city that this tour usually covers:
- Glorieta de España.
- Plaza Belluga.
- Iglesia de San Juan de Dios - Old “Alcázar mayor”
- Islamic Wall Museum.
- Santa Clara la Real - Old “Alcázar menor”
- Santo Domingo Square.
- Trapería Street.
The tour itinerary is subject to change should circumstances arise that warrant it, such as festivals, street closures, or gatherings of any kind that necessitate such modifications. The guide will always try to find alternatives and offer the best possible experience to participants.
